Princeville sits on the bluff above the Hanalei River and beautiful Hanalei Bay.
Kauai has no rivers navigable by ocean-going vessels, and only two that are navigable at all—the Wailua (near Kapa'a) and the Hanalei. In the town of Hanalei, you can rent a kayak and paddle out into the Bay, or upriver under the one-lane bridge and into the bird refuge.
In ancient times, the Hawaiians grew taro in the broad Hanalei Valley. Today, rice is still grown here.
Walk or drive to Hanalei Bay, home to Puff the Magic Dragon.
Walk along the pier if you want to be in the bay without getting your feet wet.
The surf can be mild or rough in Hanalei Bay (check the surf reports!) but the sunsets are spectacular.
